The monument is among the world's tallest masonry structures, standing 555feet in height and made of marble, granite, and sandstone. It was designed by Robert Mills, a prominent American architect of the 1840s. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884, almost 30 years after the architect's death.

The Visitor Center is open seven days a week. The Center features many aspects of the White House, including its architecture, furnishings, first families, social events, and relations with the press and world leaders, as well as a thirty-minute video. Tour requests for the White House MUST be made through one's member of Congress 6 months ahead of time.
