The monument is among the world's tallest masonry structures, standing 555feet in height and made of marble, granite, and sandstone. It was designed by Robert Mills, a prominent American architect of the 1840s. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884, almost 30 years after the architect's death. |

The Visitor Center is open seven days a week. The Center features many aspects of the White House, including its architecture, furnishings, first families, social events, and relations with the press and world leaders, as well as a thirty-minute video. Tour requests for the White House MUST be made through one's member of Congress 6 months ahead of time. |
